"Fantastic location and view. We loved
making our way around the islands looking at the wildlife. Our
guide Christie was really friendly and also very helpful. She
interacted well with our family whilst still being busy with
guiding and cooking. We thought Christie worked really hard to
make our vacation fantastic." David Coombs - UK

The Wild Orca Discovery
Expedition
|
WeGo Kayaking Expeditions
operates killer whale (Orca) kayaking tours in the Inside
Passage where you will spend time at our two separate
permanent wilderness kayaking outposts on one exciting trip.
By utilizing our two camps on one trip you will have the
opportunity to do and see far more than on a conventional base
camp kayaking trip that utilizes only one camp, or on moving
trips where you have to spend valuable time packing kayaks
each day.
|
|
|
|
Our Hanson Island Kayak Camp is
located in Johnstone Strait, home to one of the largest
resident Orca (killer whale) populations in the world. We
specifically chose our Hanson Island Kayak Camp location
because it is situated along one of the most consistently
traveled routes
used by these magnificent creatures. From the Orca
Lounge cliffs at our Hanson Hideaway basecamp you will be able
to see the Orcas, (or Killer Whales as they are commonly
known), forage, swim and play as they make their way up the
coast of Hanson Island.
|
|
Maggy Point Basecamp is the only
permanent kayak base camp located within the boundaries of the
Broughton Archipelago Marine Park. The park
is made up of a myriad of small islands that are ideal for
kayaking and exploring. The Inside Passage is world renowned
for incredible kayaking, camping, stunning scenery and
wildlife viewing. Other wildlife that we are likely to see in
this naturally diverse region include, humpback whales, minke
whales, porpoises, bald eagles, rhinoceros auklets, bears,
seals, dolphins and more…..
|

|
Why Kayak the Inside
Passage?
|
|
Located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, the
Johnstone Strait area is home to one of the
largest resident Orca (killer whale) populations in the world.
Each year the Orcas return to the area to feed on the abundant
supply of salmon, and to rub their bellies on the smooth
pebble ocean floor of Robson Bight (Michael Biggs Marine
Sanctuary). The Orcas (killer whales) of Johnstone Strait
number over 200 whales in total.
|
|
By offering this unique two base camp style of
expedition, we can kayak throughout a broader range of the
Inside Passage, and therefore you will have a higher
likelihood of seeing/kayaking with whales. It also provides
the opportunity to paddle around the small islands of the
Broughton Archipelago. A truly amazing area rich with native
culture and marine wildlife.

How the Wild Orca Discovery Expedition
Works

|
On your first day in you will be dropped off at either
Hanson Island Camp or Maggy Point Basecamp (it alternates each
week, you can check when you are booking to see which kayaking
camp you will be starting your adventure from). On Wednesday
mornings, after two nights at camp one, we will kayak to camp
two where we will spend another two nights enjoying this fun
adventure.
Please note: Inclement weather can sometimes cause
delays and we may need to switch camps on a different day.
Although this will happen infrequently, we want you to know
the possibility exists.

Packing Gear
Do I have to pack all of my gear in a kayak
when we change camps? Absolutely not!
From experience we know it takes at least 2-3 hours to pack up a
group of kayaks. We are confident that you would rather spend
this time kayaking. On the day we switch camps your guides will
have you gather your personal belongings and place them on the
beach in the morning; our camp attendants will arrive in our
aluminum power skiff and move your gear to the new camp while
you are out enjoying your kayaking day. When you arrive at the
new camp your gear will be there waiting for you inside your
tent!
When Is The Expedition?

The Wild Orca Discovery Kayaking Expedition is a 5-day
tour that runs Monday to Friday. These kayaking
trips start in late June and run weekly through
to the third week of September (please check
the schedule below for dates and prices).
Sunday
Our friendly guides will meet you in the town of Port McNeill on
Sunday night for a brief meet and greet orientation.
Monday - Day One
Monday morning we will board the water taxi at 9 am for a scenic
ride through the emerald waters of the Inside Passage and be
delivered to the first base camp.
Wednesday - Day Three
This is the day we switch camps. Our camp managers will move
your gear to the new camp while you are out enjoying your day of
kayaking.
 |
Friday - The Last Day
Friday afternoon we will be picked up at 15:00 by the water
taxi and arrive back into Port McNeill approximately 1 hour
later or 16:00. We arranged this tour to run Monday to Friday
to allow you ample time over the weekends to travel and make
your connections.

Our Basecamp Locations

|
Location, location, location..... The
site for our permanent base camps were chosen with great care;
they are an ideal mix location and view. Our Maggy
Point camp is the only camp of its kind located within the
boundaries of the Broughton Archipelago Provincial Marine
Park. The park is made up of myriad of small islands that are
ideal for kayaking and exploring. Maggy Point base camp is set
in on a peninsula with amazing ocean views. It features a
covered central meeting-cooking location, high quality
|
|
|

|
Mountain Hardware 3 person tents (we only
put 2 people to a tent) on wooden platforms, and our funky hot
wilderness shower. Each site has it's own platform where the
tents are securely fastened for maximum comfort and stability.
Each tent is also covered by a tarp to allow extra room to
move around and stay dry in case it rains.
Our other camp, Hanson
Hideaway, is strategically located along one of the most
commonly used travel routes for the whales. It is not uncommon
to have an up close view of the whales from the cliff area in
our camp that we call the Orca Lounge, as the
whales swim past.
|
|
Relaxation, comfort and security are what our guests
can expect in both of our camps. Each site features lush
green, forested landscapes with tremendous ocean
views……. a place where you are sure to feel a
real connection to the natural surroundings. The camps
themselves are designed with your comfort and enjoyment in
mind. Each site features covered wilderness kitchens/ meeting
areas, ecologically conscious bathroom facilities, hot showers
and welcoming tent sites. Without question, we have two of the
best basecamp sites in the area. By combining
the use of two of these excellent camp locations on one trip,
we ensure that your kayaking expedition will be a more
complete experience; whales and the Broughton
Archipelago!

Kayaking with Whales - A Typical Day
|
 |
We start off the day with a hearty breakfast prepared
with great care by your guides. Our daily kayaking plan is
organized to provide the best opportunity for viewing the
killer whales and other marine creatures that inhabit this
area, and to use the currents and winds to our best advantage.
A typical kayaking day involves a full day of paddling
separated by a lunch break (usually 1 hour) and the occasional
stop to stretch legs. We are usually away from the base camps
for the full day. Using our VHF radios we stay in contact with
a network of researchers and operators
|
|
to ensure our best chance to encounter the killer
whales. Our guides also carry a hydrophone
(underwater microphone) so that we can listen to the voice
of the killer whales as they pass.

taxi ride through Johnstone and Chatham Straits. Our 40-minute
water taxi journey from Port McNeill takes you through calm waters
that are rich with an abundant array of marine wildlife and the
trip often provides incredible viewing opportunities. And beside
that, we like to support the local economy by using local
companies that have the best area knowledge.
