Vargas Island Voyager Expedition Overview

Launching from the west coast village of Tofino, our Vargas Island Voyager expedition combines the best of what Clayoquot Sound has to offer. Over the course of four breathtaking days, we will spend time sea kayaking, exploring, feasting and learning about this unique area that was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2000. We will have the opportunity to visit the sandy expanses of the outer beaches, explore inter tidal zones filled with astonishing sea creatures and visit remarkable Meares Island; home of the Big Tree Trail. |

This area is home to the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. Nuu-chah-nulth means "all along the mountains and sea." As soon as you enter the unique landscape of this region, it is easy to understand the connection the Nuu-chah-nulth people have had with the land and sea for the estimated 10,000 years that they have lived here. While exploring this rugged and beautiful area by sea kayak it is easy to understand the The Nuu-chah-nulth term HISHUK ISH TSAWALK, which translates to "everything is one and all is interconnected." This connection is further evident in the coastal rainforest of Clayoquot Sound. The temperate rainforest is habitat for a diverse grouping of rare species including wolves, black bears, eagles, deer, migrating shore birds. |
The waters surrounding Vargas Island are the summer feeding ground for a summer resident population of Grey whales. These magnificent creatures take part in an annual migration of 11,000 miles that sees them enter the area in early spring and depart in the fall. Sighting these leviathans of the deep is not an uncommon occurrence. |

The Vargas Island Inn
After two nights of camping on remote sandy beaches we will spend a final night of soothing relaxation nestled snugly in the jewel of Clayoquot Sound, the Inn at Vargas Island. The wood fired beach front sauna is a great place to relax and reminisce on the days events.
